Thirty houses were damaged by gale force winds that swept across the Koralawella area in Moratuwa.The Disaster Management Centre noted that four persons were injured.

Gale force winds swept across the area at around 4 a.m on Friday. Locals said that the winds lasted for around two minutes.

“We heard a loud noise. When we took a look the roofing sheets were gone and the house was damaged”, said a local from the area

The supply of electricity to the area was also disrupted due to this situation. The Department of Meteorology said that gale force winds were caused by the activation of the Southwestern Monsoon Season.

The Department of Meteorology says that during the next 24 hours winds speeds in the sea areas from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankesanthurai and from Pottuvil to Matara via Hambantota will increase up to 50 kmph.
