Protesters and Indian armed forces have been continuously clashing, despite despite a round-the-clock curfew imposed by authorities.
Dozens of protesters have been killed while hundreds wounded over the weekend following the police and paramilitary troops opening fire on tens of thousands of Kashmiris who took to the streets to pay homage to the rebel leader Burhan Wani, who was killed on Friday.
Wani was the leader Hizb-ul Mujahideen ( a group that fought against Indian control over the region). Widely credited for for reviving armed resistance in Kashmir through the use of social media, Wani managed to reach a younger demographic of men and called on them to rebel.
Activists and separatist leaders allege that the security forces’ response to the protests were riddled with excessive force.
