Today marks World Population Day.World Population Day falls on the 11th of July every year. The objective of this day is to call for attention on urgent population issues.
The theme this year is ‘Investing in teenage girls.’
Despite strides the world has made towards gender equality, teenage girls around the world face enormous challenges such as access to basic information about their health, human rights and reproductive rights can be hard to come by, leaving them vulnerable to illness, injury and exploitation.
In 1989, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that July 11 be observed by the international community as World Population Day, a day to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.
Through this day, activities and programmes are encouraged to make people’s rights a reality. World Population Day aims to end child marriage, curb adolescent pregnancy, and to empower girls to make informed choices about their health and lives.
The population in the world increases by 1.13 percent annually while the world population as at today is about 7.4 billion.
