The Supreme Court issued an interim order suspending the increase of the Value Added Tax and Nation Building Tax which was so increased from May 2, this year.

This interim order is to be in effect until the cases are fully and finally heard. Chief Justice K. Sri Pavan, and Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare and Prasanna Jayawardene considered the petitions.

Court also stated that in the event parliament passes a statute with regard to this, then the order will not be enforceable.

The Supreme Court made this order after considering five fundamental rights petitions filed.

The cases were filed by several parties, including MP Wimal Weerawansa.
