Today marks day two of the annual Esala perahera of the Historic Kataragama Temple. News1st, together with the Sirasa media network, are the media sponsors of the annual procession .

We came across Wasana the tusker who parades the streets carrying the sacred relics of  the Kataragama Devalaya during the Ruhunu Kataragama Esala Festival.

Wasana who is a descendant of a proud line of tuskers that date back to the time of King Dutugemunu is entering his 30th year of service at the Kataragama Devalaya.

Wasana who is turning 45 years of age, not only serves the  Lord of Kataragama, every year.. He travels to Kandy to be a part of the Esala perahera of the temple of the sacred tooth relic.

Wasana is being purified by the waters of the Menik Ganga in order to perform her duties once more tonight.
