The sixth Professional and Career Women Awards organised by the Women in Management and the IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, was held in Colombo on Friday.
The award ceremony was held to celebrate the achievements of remarkable women who inspire others through their work.Fifty women were presented with awards under 22 different categories.
“We have adequate laws such as penal code, prevention of domestic violence act to deal with violence against women”, said the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Chandrani Bandara
She pointed out that penalties are high for offences committed on violence – however the law enforcement agencies are not sensitive enough to go deeper into the incidents of violence and this empowerment process aims to reduce violence in the village level.
“We need to expand and strengthen our activities to reach out to all women of the country”,she said and further stated that this cannot be done through the ministry alone unless there is support of the civil society organisations and the donors and that everyone has to have a proactive approach to get rid of the this ugly and deadly disease of violence against women and children.
“We cannot be silent anymore because as Martin Luther King said we will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and deeds of the bad, but the appalling silence of the good people”.
