NDDCB Chairman says list of public representatives linked to drug rackets is missing

Chairman of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) Professor Ravindra Fernando, during a media briefing convened at the Government Information Department on Thursday , stated that the list containing details of public representatives who are involved in drug rackets has gone missing.

Chairman of the NDDCB, Prof. Ravindra Fernando noted that, unfortunately, the former chairman has not given this document to anyone else, and he has not given it to the officials in the institute, the ministry, its secretary, the Minister, or the president.

“We checked the data at our institute. We cannot find it there as well”, said the Chairman

Statistics pertaining to drug addicts in the country were also revealed at the press briefing

The Chairman of the NDDCB further noted that the main problem in the country is the use of Heroin and Cannabis, and according to statistics, there are between 45 000 to 50 000 Heroin addicts, while there are close to 200,000 Cannabis users,  while close to 1000 or 2000 people become new addicts

Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order and Southern Development, Jagath P. Wijeweera pointed out that there is declining trend in alcohol consumption in country,  but the number of individuals who smoke ‘that’ does not seem to decline.
