The Halamba wewa in Ihala Thammannawa, Medawachchiya is a tank that nourished over 200 acres of paddy land.
The tank supported the livelihood of hundreds of agrarian families in Rajarata,
However, due to neglect and mismanagement the Halamba wewa, just like many others tanks around the country, is now on the verge of total ruin. The lives that it sustained have also been adversely affected. With the objective of uplifting the lives of these farming communities, Sirasa TV together with News1st, took the first step on Saturday of reconstructing this ancient tank. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on Saturday to coincide celebrations to mark Sirasa TV’s 18th anniversary.
News 1st and Sirasa TV will bear all financial costs that will be incurred in the renovation of the tank. All measures are being taken to invest the renovated tank in the public within three months. During a live telecast of the ceremony that was held this morning, people were educated about the importance of protecting the tank.
