A discussion was held in Colombo on Saturday regarding the problems faced by vehicle importers.
The discussion was held between the Finance Minister and vehicle importers. During the meeting the Finance Minister had provided solutions to some of the issues faced by importers.
President of the Vehicle Importer’s Association of Lanka, Sampath Merenchige pointed out that large taxes were imposed on vehicles with an engine capacity of 1500 cc to 2000 cc and at that instance the government made a special policy announcement that there will be no change in tax calculations for vehicles that were already imported, but the minister provided a special relief.
He added that there is a levy that has to paid to the government when re-importing vehicles – 10 percent of the due tax has to be paid for it – and the minister stated that this levy will be removed and made another statement for the consumers that the tax will not be reduced for two years.
Subsequently, the Finance Minister addressed the media where he noted that after increasing the income a situation will be created where everyone can buy a vehicle.
