Discussions were held on adding three new parties to our alliance:UPFA General Secretary

The Executive Committee of the United People’s Freedom Alliance convened on Friday evening.

The executive committee meeting, which convened at the president’s official residence on Friday night was presided over by President Maithripala Sirisena.

This is the first UPFA executive committee meeting that was held after Minister Mahinda Amaraweera assumed duties as the General Secretary of the party.

UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera stated that discussions were held on adding three new parties to the alliance as well as about the political situation in the country .

He further added that Wimal Weerawansa was not a part of the alliance and that there are parties joining in from the ‘joint opposition’ but pointed out that there is no such thing as the ‘joint opposition’ and only a placard with that name

“Even Mervyn Silva says he is from the opposition”, he said and noted that the other side is saying they are from the ‘joint opposition’, and there is group of SLFP alliance members on that side as well

State Minister of Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardhena noted that Douglus Devananda’s EPDP party, Thondaman’s Congress Party and even the party of Athaullah and many other parties have agreed and the Executive Committee decided to add those parties into our fold and strengthen our alliance.

Chief Minister of the Southern Province Shan Wijelal noted that it was mainly discussed and decided that if these parties accept the vision and the policies of the UPFA – to hold further discussions and to make them members of the alliance through a Memorandum of Understanding.
