Operations underway to defuse unexploded ordnance at Salawa Camp

The Colombo – Awissawella road in Kosgama has been re-opened. The road was re-opened after being closed down as a result of the fire which occurred at the Salawa Army Camp. This situation was confirmed to News 1st by Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander of the Western Security Forces.

The fire, which broke out at the armoury of the  Salawa Army Camp, left a trail of destruction by the time it was contained.

According to News 1st’s Manjula Premaratne, a number of personnel are deployed for the clean-up operation. Manjula was in close proximity to the Army Base on June 7. He described the scenery as an environment similar to a war-zone, with the destruction that took place on Sunday, June 5.

He said that army engineers are currently engaged in operations within the camp to gather shrapnel and defuse unexploded ordnance.
