A group of fisherman staged a protest today ( June 1st) over the damages caused to the mangrove in the Negombo Lagoon.

The fishermen allege that this damage was caused due to measures taken to widen the Dadugam Oya for the drainage of flood waters.

When the Aththanagalu Oya overflowed during the recent incessant rains, the flood waters receded via the Dadugam Oya.

As a solution to the disaster situation, the Dadugam Oya was widened.

Lagoon Fisheries associations in Negombo say that the project which was carried out without their knowledge, has harmed the southern part of the lagoon.
