Authorities step in to solve garbage problem in flood-hit areas after News1st report

Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Mustapha says that a special programme is afoot to remove the garbage from areas affected by floods.

News 1st visited the banks of the Kelani River on Saturday, May 28 and highlighted the issues faced by those living in the area due to the mounting garbage. Areas of Kotikawatte, Wellampitiya and Brandiyawatte including main roads and by roads were filled with garbage and waste.

New 1st took initiatives to inform the authorities regarding the issue. In reply, Minister Faiszer Musthapha elaborated on the garbage dispose programme. He stated that a broad programme will be implemented for the cause in the next four to five days.

“We must accept that the garbage cannot be removed from a day or two.We need to find a way to face the challenge of the people even in the short-term”,  Faizer Mustapha, Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government.

Considerable amount of garbage were removed under the leadership of the Chairman of Mulleriyawa, Kotikawatte Pradeshiya Sabha Prasanna Solangarachchi, Chairman of the kolonnawa Pradeshiya Sabha Ravindra Udayashantha and several other officials.

Efforts by the relevant authorities was appreciated by the public in the area.
