May 18 2016 (Istanbul) – The brainchild of UN-Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, the inaugural World Humanitarian Summit will take place in Istanbul, Turkey on the 23rd of May. The summit is a landmark UN event, aimed at changing the way humanitarian response and aid is managed globally.
Representing Sri Lanka will be the Capital Maharaja Organization, the sole Sri Lankan company selected to be represented at the summit.
Group Director Chevaan Daniel will address the UN Special Session, focusing on the Organizations focus on quick, determined action during times of humanitarian need. The final report compiled by the University of Peradeniya following the ‘News 1st Gammadda’ Door-to-door campaign’ will also be handed to the UN at a special ceremony to be held on the side-lines of the summit.
The World Humanitarian Summit is the result of a process that began over two years ago. The Capital Maharaja Organization was invited by the UN to be part of its regional consultation in Dushanbe, Tajikistan and then, at the Global Consultation in Geneva last year as well.
Last month, in a first for a Sri Lankan company, The UN selected the Maharaja Organization’s Stein Studios to host its Sri Lanka Pre-Summit workshop.
The summit in Istanbul will bring hundreds of world leaders coming together to make a commitment to change the way humanitarian work is carried out, with the hope that help will reach those affected faster and more efficiently. A key objective of the summit is also ‘disaster preparedness’.
