Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C.V. Wigneswaran criticised the military presence in the North at an event titled Discussion on Nation Building and Reconciliation in Colombo Thursday evening.
The Chief Minister of the Northern Province charged that trust is not born at the end of the barrel of the gun, nor can it flourish when private lands are occupied by military forces, and the immediate transition to a civilian atmosphere is essential for the building of trust.
He explained that there is no security concern that requires the military to be retained in the Northern Province and the Tamil people are war-weary, so they will not condone any attempts to revive violence.
He pointed out that an efficient police force could handle civil time security quite professionally, and there is no need for the military to continue to be in the north usurping and using the peoples lands, building, trades and livelihood sources.
He went on to note that a possible revival of LTTE activities are often quoted as the reason for the continued stationing of the army.
“It is my position that Prabhakaran was the creation of State Terrorism”, charged the Chief Minister of the Northern Province who further noted that the Tamil community will be destroyed if the government continues to station the army amidst the victims of the erstwhile war, you cannot blame anyone if another Prabakaran gets reincarnated, he stated.
The Chief Minister also commented on using the term ‘Nation Building’
“We are a multi-ethnic, multi lingual multi religious society”, said the Chief Minister of the Northern Province who expressed that when speaking of nation building what is being discussed is the rebuilding of this country and diversities.
