More than 200 vessels pass through southern tip of SL daily: Secretary of Defence

At the 8th Global Environment Facility Biennial International Waters Conference in Colombo, Secretary of Defence, Karunasena Hettiarachchi commented on maritime security

The secretary of defence stated that the focus has to be on the Indian Ocean security since there are more than 200 vessels that pass through the southern tip of Sri Lanka daily, and more than 50% of food and fuel is transported from the west to the east, and east to the west, in this area

He added that the navy and air force are working together to provide security for the Indian Ocean region and therefore it is very important role to look after the safety of this sea lanes of communication and trade, as the ministry of environment .

He pointed out that the naval capacities to protect this area are being improved, particularly from drug trafficking, human trafficking and  various kinds of threats in the Sudan and Somalian area.
