Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa who was arrested by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division was released on bail by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa was accused of purchasing 1.5 acres of land under the address of No. 20 / A , Eliyakanda Road, Brownhill using Rs.50 million Rupees allegedly earned illegally.
Basil Rajapaksa arrived at the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division on Thursday morning to provide a statement in this regard, following which, he was arrested.
The former minister was arrested under the penal code and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and was produced before the Chief Magistrate of Matara.
Presenting facts to court, police said that the land was purchased under the name of Ayomi Punyakanthi Galappattii, the sister of Basil Rajapaksa’s wife. Police added that she is currently residing in Canada and her husband , the first suspect in the case, has failed reveal details on how money was earned to purchase the land.
Astrologer Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena had informed police that Basil Rajapaksa and his wife intervened with land matters relating to the auspicious times. Police also announced there is information that Basil Rajapaksa had purchased the land.
Attorneys appearing on behalf of Basil Rajapaksa requested that their client be granted bail as the first and second suspects in the case have also been granted bail.
The chief magistrate who took these matters into consideration ordered the former minister to be released on a cash bail of Rs.50,000 and three surety bails of one million rupees each.
“This is what we have to face under the rule of vengeance”, charged former minister,Basil Rajapaksa who noted that it is a relief that the independence of the judiciary prevails.
