The Human Rights Initiative 2016 by the European Union to Sri Lanka and Maldives was unveiled in Colombo on Thursday.

“We welcome the growing cooperation between the government and civil society organisations and the government;s steps taken to support a vibrant civil society”, said the Ambassador and Head of the European Union to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, David Daly.

He also stated:

Moving the NGO Secretariat from the Ministry of Defence and putting it under the Ministry of National Co-existence Dialogue and Official Languages and the government’s other actions to involve civil society representatives in decision-making processors including constitutional council and other bodies, are all very much, steps in the right direction, but there is still much more that needs to be done.
