Child apprehended for begging dies at Maharagama Development Centre

A boy who was being housed at a Child Development Centre in Maharagama, has passed away after falling into a well on the premises.

The boy who was apprehended by the police for begging, was referred to the detention centre after he was produced before the Battaramulla Magistrate’s Court.

The boy, believed to be about eight years old, had fallen into the well while bathing on Tuesday evening. The boy had passed away after being hospitalised.

The matron noted that children referred by the Department of Social Services and the Department of Probation and Child Care, are cared for at this home.

Officials at the Department of Probation and Child Care have initiated an investigation into the death.
