A special police programme is underway to crack down on crime in the Jaffna peninsula. The operation led to the arrest of five members from an alleged organised crime gang known as Rock Tommy.
The suspects arrested were between the ages of 18 and 23 and are allegedly connected to crimes that took place in Jaffna recently. Police say the also recovered two hand-grenades, three swords, an axe and several other weapons from the possession of the suspects.
Among the suspects are two school students. Interrogations have revealed details of four other suspects. the senior Officer in Charge of the area said that a police operation is underway to apprehend them.
The suspects are under remand custody. Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilancheliya ordered the police to seek the assistance of the Police Special Task Force in order to crack down on organised crimes in the Jaffna Peninsula.
The magistrate also ordered to cease the manufacture of swords and machetes at blacksmiths in Jaffna.
