Authorities at the Kelaniya University said on Sunday that an Observation Committee has been appointed, with a view to eradicate ragging from the campus.

Vice Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara noted that as soon as they received the complaint regarding the ragging of a female student, the university asked that an entry be made at the police immediately.

He also said that they are enforcing the convention reached with the University Grants Commission and the Commonwealth Universities Association to prevent ragging, and the harassment of women in universities. He added that they will not keep any room in the campus for ragging in any form

Meanwhile, at an event held in Nawalapitiya on Saturday, Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella, leveled accusations at the university administration over ragging at the Kelaniya University.

The Minister said that they must accept responsibility to control this. The minister pointed out that it is  not the government but the vice chancellor and the administration that govern universities.

Minister Kiriella also said that they cannot wash their hands off this and said that if there is ragging in the university then the vice chancellor and the administration are accountable, and the students too should be aware of this.

Meanwhile Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara noted that the government has given universities the independence to take the necessary steps and they are working accordingly.
