Sri Lanka will witness sixteen May Day rallies organised to mark International Workers’ Day on Sunday.
The May Day Rally of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party-led United People’s Freedom Alliance will take place in two phases. The processions will move towards Galle from the Pinnaduwa access point and on the Galle Road starting from the Mahamodara Hospital. The May Day rally will take pace at the Samanala Grounds in Galle under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena.
General Secretary of the SLFP, Minister Duminda Dissanayake stated that that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party will host only one May Day rally, and will be held at the Samanala Grounds in Galle, and that no one has informed that they will be attending other rallies
A group of MPs from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and representatives from party’s representing the alliance will commence a rally in Kirulapone.
Those who will be participating in the rally will commence their journey from the Shalika Grounds in Narahenpita.
The May Day rally of the United National Party will commence from Pradeepa Mawatha in Maligawatte and will proceed to Campbell Park in Borella. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will preside over the event.
UNP MP,Dr. Kavinda Jayawardena stated that the political might in the country and the world was seen until now, and it was shown through, and this was done by every party. He added that however that this time the United National Party is doing something that is completely different.
“These are the working people. They have made sacrifices for us and have shed their sweat for us”, said the UNP MP who added that this is what is being commemorated.
He further added that there is no expectation on the number of people that will turn up
The May Day Rally of the JVP will commenced from the S. De S. Jayasinghe Grounds in Dehiwala. The meeting will take place at the BRC Grounds in Havelock Town.
JVP Politburo Member, K.D. Lalkantha stated that there are many issues being faced today which was not experienced during the previous May Day rallies
He further added this will be the massive May Day rally which would urge the rulers to face those issues and like previous years, the May Day rally will be colourful
The May Day Rally of the Democratic Party led by Minister Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka will commence from Rajagiriya, and will proceed to the Buddhadasa Grounds in Battaramulla.
