Sri Lanka with a score of 44.96 has been ranked 141 out of 180 countries in the 2016 World Press Freedom Index.  The Index was compiled and published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

In the report published last year (2015), Sri Lanka with a score of 60.28, was ranked 165 out of 180 countries.

The index has been topped by Finland followed by the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and New Zealand.

At the bottom of the index lies Eritrea at 180th rank. It is preceded by North Korea, Turkmenistan, Syria and China at 179th, 178th, 177th and 176th position respectively.

The report has been published every year since 2002 by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), it is  an important advocacy tool based on the principle of emulation between states. According to the RSF it is a snapshot of the media freedom situation based on an evaluation of pluralism, independence of the media, quality of legislative framework and safety of journalists in each country.

The degree of freedom available to journalists in 180 countries is determined by pooling the responses of experts to a questionnaire devised by RSF. This qualitative analysis is combined with quantitative data on abuses and acts of violence against journalists during the period evaluated.

According to RSF, the rise in the rankings for Sri Lanka is attributed to the change in government and the promises issued by the new government that journalists and cyber-dissidents would no longer have to fear reprisals for their political views, or for articles on such sensitive subjects as corruption and the military.

RSF also reports that harassment of Tamil Media has also seen a decline.
