A workshop was held in Colombo for local government leaders and provincial government officials under the auspices of the President.

President Sirisena noted that he has seen over the past decades a minister in charge of local government is appointed because the government of the day needs to give that person a ministerial portfolio, whereas it should be given to a talented individual who can fulfill the task.

Explaining further, he noted that if the local government and cultural affairs portfolios are not given to the proper people they will capture the nation and also move forward in national politics since there are no limits for these portfolios.

Furthermore, he noted that he has conferred this portfolio on a talented person where he would carry out his role with commitment.

Finally, he stated that he speaks to him at least twice week, over the telephone, informing him of the problems in the ministry and what needs to be done and what is being done to address it.
