A general amnesty period was announced to hand over illegal firearms.
Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Karunasena Hettiarachchi made this statement while attending a news conference held in Colombo on Wednesday.
A sum of Rs.5000 will be provided for a shot gun, Rs.10,000 for a pistol and revolver and Rs. 25,000 for a T56 assault riffle.
It was also pointed out during the media briefing that operations will be conducted to nab those who do not hand over their firearms during this amnesty period.
