The Sinhala and Tamil New year is marked today, Wednesday April 13.

The New year is set to dawn at 7.48.p.m. while the ‘Punya Kalaya’ begins at 1.24 p.m. today and will end at 2.12 a.m. tomorrow.

The auspicious time for lighting of the hearth and preparing meal falls at 8.06 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 13.

The tradition of transaction and consuming the first meal of the New Year starts at 8.54 p.m. today.

Anointing of oil is marked at 10.41 on Saturday while the auspicious time to begin work is at 6.27 a.m. on Monday.

Meanwhile, in his message for the Sinhala Tamil New year President Maithripala Sirisena, says that one of the great and significant moments of the New Year customs and traditions is preparing and partaking meals in all solemnity, at the same auspicious time.

The president in his message noted that New Year is a combination of customs and traditions like sharing and appreciating, respecting elders and giving gifts to each other.

President Sirisena also notes quote ‘Let us determine to celebrate this New Year with due consideration to the core values of this festival and sustaining our distinctive cultural heritage’

The Sinhala Tamil New year message issued by the President further notes the New Year should make the people of the country determine to rise as one country – one nation, unhindered by divisions or disparities but genuine peace and equality, and to build a drug-free, alcohol-free country in the New Year, commencing today.

In his message on the Sinhala and Tamil New year Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe called on  Lankans to come together to celebrate the occasion in fellowship and unity.
