Police stated that an increase in the number of accidents was reported during the festive season.Three individuals were killed and five injured in accidents that occurred during the past 24 hours.

Two individuals were killed  in the Marathadiya area in Trincomalee, when a jeep crashed into a three-wheeler.

The Office of the Police Media Spokesperson said that the driver of the three-wheeler and three female passengers were severely injured in the accident that occurred at 9.50 on Monday night.

Two of the female passengers succumbed to their injuries upon admission to the Trincomalee Hospital.

The deceased were a 59 year-old-mother and her 33-year-old daughter who were residents of Sampalathivu.

The driver of the jeep was arrested in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, one person was killed in the Kandarawa area in Meddawachchiya when a motorbike skidded off the road and crashed into a tree.

Three individuals were injured in the incident. The deceased was a 38-year-old father of two who was a resident of Wahamalgallawa.

A woman travelling along the road was injured in the accident.

Our correspondent stated that the three injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. One individual was injured in an accident that occurred close to the signal lights at the Galle – Pinnaduwa entry point to the Southern Expressway.

Our correspondent stated that the accident occurred when a van travelling from Pinnaduwa to Galle crashed into a small lorry travelling from Akuressa to Galle.

It is reported that the lorry tipped over and the driver was injured.

A traffic congestion was seen at the entry point owning to the accident.

Meanwhile, Director of the National Hospital Dr. Anil Jasinghe requests the general public to take necessary steps to reduce accidents during the festive season.

He also informed the general public to be cautious when using fireworks during the festive season.
