The monument has an estimated height of 37.94 metres and covers an area of 3,000 square metres.

Prior to concluding his official visit to China, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe responded to questions posed by journalists at a media briefing in China. The main focus was on the Port City Project in Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister,Ranil Wickremesinghe explained that the ‘Port City’ is part of the bigger Megapolis plan which will turn the Western Province in to a Megapolis of eight million people, making it the biggest city in the Indian Ocean. The Prime Minister stated that there will be more opportunities for infrastructure development by Chinese and other companies.

The premier explained that Hambantota will come more in line with Chen Cheng, and it will be integrated to the harbour areas and the industrial areas, the air port and the industrial zones and the tourist zones.

He added that the Port City Project is an investment project and the investment status given to Port City has been guaranteed.

“We are not changing it, though we are changing our investment policies, what has been given to the Port City has not been changed and the Port City is an investment project”, he said and explained that because of the present global economy and revenue collection being low, export earning must be diversified

He added that talks have been conducted with some companies and also the government of China, in regard to the possibilities of structure projects becoming public private partnerships which leads to part of the debt becoming equity held by the Chinese companies. And in keeping with policy, many of the infrastructure projects will be on a PPP basis or a BOT basis.
