Politburo Member of the Frontline Socialist Party Kumar Gunaratnam has been sentenced to one year in prison, and fined Rs. 50,000.
The order was issued when the case pertaining to violations of visa regulations, that was filed against Gunaratnam, was taken up before Kegalle Magistrate, Prasanna Alwis on Thursday, March 31.
According to the defendants lawyers, Gunaratnam has admitted in court, while presenting oral submissions, that he left the country with a different identity as death threats had been levelled against him.
Requests to grant citizenship for Gunaratnam in the country again had been turned down by the government.
