Leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Dinesh Gunawardena, met with representatives from the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections.
During the discussion, MP Dinesh Gunewardena and PAFFREL had discussions on postponing the local government elections.
Leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, MP Dinesh Gunawardena stated that after tomorrow no matter what the government nor the Election Commission says, according to the law, the tenure of all local government bodies have come to an end.
The MP commenting on the response from the PAFFREL noted that they had accepted the theory that the elections should be held. Therefore after tomorrow the Elections Commission must announce the elections within 14 days. He went on to note that if it is not held, the first question the Joint Opposition would raise in parliament would be as to why the Elections Commission was established.
Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi stated that the previous government must be held accountable for the demarcation process which is yet to be concluded.
He added that the Demarcation Committee took over two years to complete the process. But given that major allegations began to rise as justice was not meted out to certain areas and districts. He went on to note that the elections must be held immediately.
