Minister Mahinda Amaraweera paid homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic after assuming duties in the capacity of General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA). Following the observances at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the Minister called on the Chief Prelate of the Malwathu Chapter Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero.
During the Minister’s visit, the Chief Prelate of the Malwathu Chapter praised the “Gammedda Door-to-Door Campaign” the largest public service initiative in the country launched by News 1st together with the support of the Peradeniya University.
Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero stated that even after gaining independence, the country has not been developed. The Most venerable thero urged that these matters should be taken into account and achieve development, rather than being divided.
Following the visit, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera stated to the media that there is no plan or agreement in the UPFA to engage in governance with the United National Party (UNP) forever. He noted that he has no doubt on the UPFA securing a victory in the next election.
Later on, a meeting of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Kandy electorate organisers was called in, which was attended by the visiting UPFA General Secretary, Mahinda Amaraweera.
In a turn of events, a tense situation arose when the General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera addressed the gathering of organisers.
Another person in attendance at the meeting was the former Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne.
