A feasibility study is currently underway for the construction of a domestic airport in the Haputale area. Director General of Civil Aviation H.M.C. Nimalsiri said that the airport planned to be constructed to accommodate medium scale domestic flights.
It is the intention of the government to commence the construction of the airport within the course of this year. Aviation Director General H.M.C. Nimalsiri said that this airport is being constructed targeting the tourism industry.
A discussion in this regard was held recently between the Minister of the Civil Aviation and other government officials. The airport is being constructed to accommodate flights carrying around 50 passengers.
