The Sri Lankan Women’s Cricket team bagged their first win of the Women’s WT20 tournament by beating the women hailing from Ireland in a nail-biting clash in Mohali.
Winning to toss and opting to bat first, Sri Lanka got off to a flying start as the openers Chamari Atapattu (34 off 22) and Yasoda Mendis – scored 45 runs in just 32 balls, of which Mendis contributed 9. Following the flying start, Sri Lanka suffered a blow as the wickets crumbled on regular intervals, to put Sri Lanka on 59 runs for 5 down by the 10th over.
However, Eshani Lokusuriyage and Prasadani Weerakkodi scored 35 and 32 runs respectively to enable Sri Lanka put a respectable total of 129 runs for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of their innings.
In Sri Lanka’s defence of the 129 run target, left-arm spinner Sugandika Kumari, who returned career-best figures, claimed the two early wickets of Clare Shillington and Cath Dalton.
A few from the Irish camp seemed to be able to carry the team toward victory but they-too failed to capitalize as Ireland’s wickets began to fall with 43 required off the last five overs.
Sri Lanka’s Sugandika Kumari finished with 3 for 24 to end a thrilling clash as Sri Lanka won the game by 14 runs.
