Raging fires destroy nearly 550 acres of Hatton, Kandy land

Nearly 550 acres of land has been destroyed in fires which are spreading in the mountainous regions of Hatton and Kandy.

According to our correspondent, efforts made by the Sri Lanka Air Force to douse the fire, which erupted in the Hatton area, were unsuccessful.

He added that close to 500 acres of lands were destroyed in the fire which erupted in the Kirigalthenna Reserve area in Bopaththalawa, Hatton. A MI17 type helicopter was dispatched by the Sri Lanka Air Force to douse the fire.

Air Force Spokesperson Group Captain, Chandima Alwis stated that a team of six Air Force personnel were also dispatched to contain the fire from the ground.

The agriculture community and the estate community, together with the Air Force, have been containing the fire from one side since Sunday night. Another fire, which erupted in the Dayagama area in Hatton on Sunday evening, has destroyed around ten acres of land.

Meanwhile, around 25 acres of forest land was destroyed in a fire which erupted in the Hantana mountainous area in Kandy

The Department of Wildlife Conservation says that nearly 60 hectares of farmland has been destroyed in forest fires during the course of this year.
