Lecturers attached to the University of Kelaniya continued to refrain from conducting lectures for the senior students at the university.

The move is as a mark of protest against the ragging of newcomers to the university.

The Teachers’ Association of the University of Kelaniya recently abstained from engaging in academic activities, citing incidents of ragging of newly- enrolled students to the Kelaniya University, by the senior students.

The lecturers claim that despite warnings, the senior students continued to rag the newcomers.

Chairman of the Kelaniya University Students Union,Sudesh  Abeysinghe stated that ragging does not take place in the induction programmes and no one has been told not to attend lectures, and this is only an induction and familiarisation programme.

Minister of University Education and Highways, Lakshman Kiriella noted that ragging takes place only place in certain universities.

He went on to explain that the administration lies with the vice-chancellor and the administrative board and a solution should be provided to this after the vice-chancellor, the lecturers and the students discuss it, from within the university itself.
