The Teachers’ Association of the University of Kelaniya have abstained from engaging in academic activities. The measure has been taken citing incidents of ragging of newly-enrolled students to the Kelaniya University, by the senior students.

The Teachers’ Association said that when lecturers had inquired into the matter, senior students had issued death threats and reprimanded the lecturers. The Kelaniya University Teachers’ Association held a discussion on the matter on Monday where it was decided to refrain from engaging in all academic activities of students except the for those in the first year.

President of the Kelaniya University Teachers’ Association, Prof. Halpita Hewa Sumathipala noted that they are aware that not all students are involved in these incidents. He said that therefore it is their objective to stop the programme carried out by various senior students.

He added that university students can ensure their right to obtain their education in peace, for the sake of safe-guarding their profession and respect as lecturers.

When inquiries were made from the Students’ Union of the Kelaniya University about the issue, Chairman of Kelaniya University Students’ Union, Nandana Sudesh Abeysinghe stated that they have never carried out acts of ragging on any student.

Explaining further, he added that the administration has created a row between the lecturers and students, instead of resolving the problems.
