The envoys of 31 countries visited the Polonnaruwa District on Monday, March 14.
The visit was organised by the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Mustapha, on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena.
A statement issued by the ministry reads that the purpose of this visit was to secure foreign support for villages which were abandoned and undeveloped as a result of the war.
Ambassadors and High Commissioners of 31 nations visited villages in the Polonnaruwa, Medirigiriya and Welikanda administrative divisions, which were affected by the war. The group visited the Meegaswewa Maha Vidyalaya and the Wadigawewa Primary School. People who gathered at the location, presented their problems to the diplomats.
The group also inquired into problems faced by the agrarian community in Wadigawewa. The diplomats also paid their respects at a cemetery where 243 people killed in a terrorist attack on October 15, 1992, were laid to rest.
The group then toured the Mahathalakola wewa area. The envoys later met with President Maithripala Sirisena, in Polonnaruwa.
