The final rites of the Late Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect, Most Venerable Galagama Sri Aththadassi Thera were performed on Sunday evening at the Police Grounds in Asgiriya under full state honours.
A large group, including Buddhist clergy, arrived at the Pawara Upali Memorial Hall on Sunday morning as well, to pay their last respects to the mortal remains of the Late Mahanayake Thero.
Thereafter, the final rites which are performed specially for the mortal remains of a Mahanayake Thero were carried out with the participation of the Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela and Bhikkhu Theras.
The mortal remains of the Late Mahanayake Thero were thereafter taken out of the memorial hall and were then taken in a motorcade to the Asgiriya Police Grounds for the final rites to be performed.
The cremation ceremony commenced with the participation of a large crowd including local and foreign representatives of the Maha Sangha, the President, Prime Minister.
“It is with respect that I note that he always showcased this nature and quality throughout his lifetime”, said Anunayake of the Malwathu Chapter, Most Ven. Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thero who further noted that the Mahanayake Thero led a simple and pious life and he preached the dhamma in a way that he was able to win the hearts of everyone.
President Sirisena noted that from the status of a Bhikkhu to a Mahanayake Thero of the highest ordinance, he became a Thero engraved in everyones hearts, especially among the hearts of the Bhikkhus, as an exemplary, calm, kind and loving character. His passing is not only a loss for the Buddhist community but a loss to the entire nation.
Thereafter, the cremation of the mortal remains of the Late Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect, Most Venerable Galagama Sri Aththadassi Thera, who rendered 81 years of his life to religious, Sasana and eational values, was observed.
