Two countrywide blackouts were experienced on Sunday, with the power supply yet to be restored. The Ministry of Power and Energy stated that the blackouts were suspected to have been caused by a fault at a sub plant in the Biyagama area.

The Ceylon Electricity Board stated that power generation at the Norochcholai Power Plant has come to a standstill.

Operations at the Ambatale and Biyagama water purification plants also came to a standstill due to the power failure.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board noted that this had hindered the pumping of water to several areas including the capital Colombo.

Against this backdrop, the Chairman of the CEB, Anura Wijepala, has decided to resign from his position. The Chairman of the CEB noted that he had reached this decision, taking responsibility for the three island- wide blackouts experienced in the past six months.

Anura Wijepala said that he will hand over his letter of resignation to the subject minister, when the power supply is restored.
