Sri Lanka’s largest public service initiative that covered the whole of Sri Lanka continued on for the sixteenth day on Thursday March 10. The News 1st Gammedda Door-to-Door campaign aims at uncovering hidden issues faced by villagers in remote areas.
The News 1st team based in the Eastern Province visited many areas in Trincomalee, Sampur, Kattaparichchan and Kinniya.
In Kattaparichchan, News 1st came across a group displaced by the conflict, still living in temporary housing. When News 1st entered this house, the two children living here were in hunger as they had no lunch. Living in a temporary shelter, the security of these children was not guaranteed.
News 1st also based itself in the Southern Province, inquiring into the plethora of issues faced by the rural villages in the South. Our team came across a bridge which links Galle and Matara – is the shortest road that leads to the Matara town from Dellawa. However, at present the bridge is decapitated, and a danger to use. Other major concerns raised by the people in these areas were the lack of a proper transport system, lack of a proper drinking water system and absence of infrastructure facilities.
The teams in the Central Province reached out to the remote areas of Kalugala, Devahuwa, Ussana, Moragolla and Pelpola located in the Matale District.
News 1st came across a bridge in Ussana which had not been renovated since 1974. While busy noting down the issues that came to light in the Ussana area, News 1st came across a concrete fence set up to keep elephants away, on the border of the Kahalla Reserve. The villagers themselves has set up this fence that spans a distance of three kilometres in a bid to prevent wild elephants from entering their village.
The Handungomuwa Regional Hospital is the closest place for villagers to obtain medication. But as of late, this hospital does not issue medicine to the patients.
