President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed to conduct the cremation of the late Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect the Most Ven. Galagama Sri Aththadassi Thero, with full state honours.

The government has declared Sunday, March 13 a day of national mourning as a mark of respect for the late Most Venerable Galagama Sri Aththadassi Mahanayake Thero.

The late Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect Most Ven. Galagama Sri Aththadassi Thero passed away on the night of March 09, in hospital, where he was admitted after a fall.

The late Mahanayake Thero was 95-years-old at the time of his demise.

The remains of the Late Mahanayake Thero was moved in a motorcade to the Urulewatte Temple in Asgiriya, Kandy.

The body was placed at the Temple until 04 p.m on Thursday afternoon and was then moved to the Pra-Upali Memorial Hall in Kandy for the public to pay their last respects.

The body will be placed there until Sunday afternoon.

Born as Kulatunga Mudiyanselage Kiri Bandara on January 11, 1922 in Palle-Siya-Patthuwa in Asgiriya , Matale, he took up robes at the age of 14, in 1936, as Galagama Dhammasidhdhi Sri Dhammanandha Aththadasi Thero.

In 1937, he entered the Sri Dharmaraja Pirivena and was educated for a decade. In 1947 he obtained distinctions in the subjects of Sinhala, Pali, Culture and Tamil.

After obtaining his “Panditha” degree he went on the obtain his Sadhdharmacharya degree in and 1950 he obtained the Abhidharmacharya degree following which he obtained the Thripitacacharya degree.

In 1950, Venerable Galagama Aththadassi Thero obtained the Majjima Bhanaka degree.

It was in the year 1999, that he was appointed as the Anunayake of the Asgiri Chapter of Siam Sect.

The venerable thero rendered a great service to the Sambuddha Sasana by promoting the Dhamma locally and internationally and also rendered a greater service to the society.

He was appointed as the 21st Mahanayake of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect on May 8, last year.
