Shots were fired at a woman who was leaving the Welikada Prison after visiting an inmate.

The twenty-three-year old pregnant woman was injured in the incident. Police said that she suffered gun shot wounds to her shoulder and chest.

She had arrived at the Welikada Prison to visit a relative who was remanded by the Kegalle Magistrate. She had come with her elder sister, and the wife of the incarcerated relative.

When they were leaving the prison, two persons who arrived on a motorcycle had stopped them and inquired as to whether they were relatives of an underworld member, while taking away their bags.

The three women had yelled for help and the gunmen had opened fire at them and fled the scene.

Meanwhile, a shooting was reported from Ampegama in Baddegama at around 08:50 on Friday night. An individual who was travelling on a motorbike on the Ampegama – Ethkandura road was shot at.Police said that two gunmen on a motorcycle had carried out the shooting and had thereafter fled. The injured person is identified as 49-year -old Raj Kumar from the Kalupe Area in Hikkaduwa. He is currently receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

Sources said that he suffered four gunshot wounds to his back. The injured is a suspect in two murders, including the one of a woman. Two cases have been filed against him at the Balapitiya Magistrate’s Court.

The body of an individual who was gunned down in Madampella, Katana was taken to his residence on Friday night. The victim was gunned down by two gunmen on a motorcycle. He was on his way home from his place of work.

A suspect in the assassination of the late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, Dematagoda Chaminda, who was injured when gunmen fired at a Prisons Department Bus in Dematagoda on Wednesday is continuing to receive treatment at the National Hospital. Police are yet to make an arrest over the shooting.

Meanwhile, gunmen on Friday shot dead an individual named Harsha Yasasri in Obeyesekerapura , Rajagiriya. He was a suspect in a number of crimes including the murder of former Southern Province minister Danny Hittetiya.
