President Maithripala Sirisena presided over a special cabinet meeting on Friday. The meeting focussed mainly on the economy of the country. The special cabinet meeting which took place on Friday evening at the President’s Office lasted for nearly two hours.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs,Dr. Harsha de Silva stated that several key matters relating to the economy were discussed, and decisions were made to take a positive approach to move ahead at a time when the global economy had collapsed
Deputy Minister of International Trade, Sujeewa Senasinghe pointed out that the previous government had left a colossal amount of debt, and this has led to paying Rs.1200 billion a year. He charged that funds were used for non-profitable ventures such as the Hambantota Port and the Mattala Airport, and further explained that even if investments are increased there is still an issue of repaying debt.
