Matthew Duncan Abeysinghe – The Swimming hero of SL

Born in 1997 in the United States of America to a family who have excelled in the sport of swimming, Matthew Duncan Abeysingha began swimming at the age of 4.

Matthew went on to set multiple records in the Ohio state and also on the national level for freestyle.

Matthew Abeysingha represented Sri Lanka at the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, the 2012 Asian Games and 2014 Youth Olympics.

During the 12th South Asian Games concluded on Tuesday (Feb 16) morning, Matthew became the Athlete to bag the most number of medals, including a record for most amount of Gold medals acquired by a Sri Lankan Swimmer. The record was previously held by fellow Sri Lankan swimming legend Julian Bolling who had bragging rights for 6 Gold medals at the 1991 South Asian Games.

Mathew accumulated 7 gold and 2 silver medals while taking part in the 200M freestyle, 100M Butterfly, the 400M medley and the 400M Freestyle event.

Meanwhile Kyle Abeysingha, the brother of Matthew Abeysingha clinched a gold, two silver medals and bronze medal adding 4 medals to the overall medal standing of Sri Lanka.
