The opening of the International Democratic Union Executive Committee was held in Colombo on Friday under the auspices of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key stated that the committee will be a ‘much stronger organisation’ when it has representation from the ruling party of India, which is the second most populated country in the world. And having a representative amongst the committee will broaden out the reach and the influence of the IDU.

He commended the success achieved by Sri Lanka under its current leadership in the last twelve months.

“We know that those are challenging issues”, he said acknowledging the work done around peace and reconciliation.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that one of India’s largest political parties and the present party in power, the B.J.P, has joined the IDU and this strengthens the IDU as a whole -with India being the largest democracy in the world.

Headded that the A.P.D.U found it difficult to function by only having Sri Lanka, Maldives, South Korea and Taiwan. But the presence of the B.J.P means that more political parties will join  and this provides the opportunity to reach out to parties in South East Asia and even the Middle East and Central Asia.

“These are the issues that we will discuss  – of how we expand the APDU and IDU in Europe itself”, said Prime Minister Wickremesinghe.
