A group who attempted to hunt free-roaming deer in a state-owned farm in the Dummalasooriya area in Madampe, have been handed over to the police by residents.
A firearm was discovered in a wooded area on Saturday night, where it had been left behind by the group of hunters. This group had attempted to hunt deer that roam in the Gorakagas Agara area in Dummalasooriya .
Residents who gathered at the location after hearing gunshots had captured the suspects, who were then handed over to the police.
A resident speaking on the incident said
“A gunshot was heard at around 9 p.m. on Saturday. And then after coming to the area a cab and a cycle was seen. Two fire arms, 13 rounds of ammunition, a cab, a motorcycle and several other arms that were in the possession of the three suspects were also taken in to custody by the police.
Police stated that the guard at the estate was also taken into custody on suspicion. According to residents, around 500 deer live in this estate.
