A website for the public consultation process for the design of reconciliation mechanisms was launched in Jaffna on Friday.
The launch which was held at the Jaffna District Secretariat, was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera and Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mangala Samaraweera, noted that this process of national reconciliation is being started, as the president said in his speech on February , is not to appease international pressure or to keep the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid, happy.
He added that this difficult journey is being embarked because forging a new feature is owed to the people of the nation, where all citizens will be treated with equal dignity and respect, so that the country can be truly united and move forward.
He also noted that bankrupt politicians as well as the ghosts of extremism “here in the north,” are trying again to stir up the people’s passion and as all scoundrels do – to whip up racism in order to take their bankrupt projects forward both in the north and in the south – and at this critical juncture, all moderates should unite so that Sri Lanka can at least have the future it truly deserves as a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural country with peace and prosperity.
“There are commitments made by the government of Sri Lanka to the world and to us, as to how this process should proceed,” said TNA Parliamentarian, M.A. Sumanthiran. He also noted that there will be cooperation with the government of Sri Lanka, and at the same time it will be looked at whether commitments are being made on behalf of the people.
