Reports of the human – elephant conflict have surfaced frequently in recent times. In the latest of such incidents, an individual was mauled to death by a wild elephant in Ambalantota on Wednesday evening.
The individual was killed in the wild elephant attack in the Akkara Vissa area in Ambalantota. Police say that the victim was attacked by the elephant while on his way to tend a herd of cattle on Wednesday night.The body of the deceased who was a 39-year-old resident of Ruhu Ridigama, is placed at the Ambalanthota Hospital.
On the other side of the conflict, a wild elephant in the Sigiriya, Digampathaha and Idigaswalana area and was found with gun shot wounds around fifteen days ago, died due to the injuries on Wednesday.Wildlife veterinarians had treated the animal on numerous occasions.
Wildlife officials said that the pachyderm’s hind leg had severe gun shot wounds.The final rites of the pachyderm were performed with the presence of the Maha Sanga as well as locals in the area, police and wildlife officials.
