A one-and-half-year-old child died after falling into a canal in Koratuwa, Weligama.

Police said that the incident had occurred at around 5 p.m. on Sunday February 8. It is learnt that the canal is  located around 20 feet away from the child’s residence.

Our correspondent said that the child had fallen into the canal while the parents were at home. Police said that the remains of the child have been placed at the Walana Hospital in Weligama  The post mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted on Monday.

Locals in the area say that the absence of a fence at the site of the incident is the cause of the tragedy.
