A group of opposition politicians observed a religious ritual at the Seenigama Devalaya on Saturday, against certain actions of the government.

Those who took part in the ritual marched to the Devalaya from Hikkaduwa.

MP Dinesh Gunwardena called for an end to the arbitrary and undemocratic era where cases are filed against leaders who made political decisions, and for bringing the High Commissioner to the country – as a mark of betrayal – and for “not protecting the independence and freedom of the country.”

Another group had organised a programme to smash coconuts against the parties that organised this ritual. The programme was organised by the Patriotic National Front. The groups attempt to march to Seenigama from Ambalangoda was foiled by the police.

In an attempt to disperse the protesters, the Police ASP present at the location stated that everyone has the right to assembly, however, the police cannot allow two groups with opposing views to meet at one place.

“You may have a good objective in mind. But you can go there after they leave or go on another day, ” he said

The group thereafter agreed to engage in their ritual at the Shanthi Bodhi Devalaya in Ambalangoda. They requested that the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division be protected.
